“What is Lot20 legislation, and what does it mean when it comes to heating and my work as an electrician?”
Well, Lot20 legislation is a new set of standards for all space heating for sale in the UK (as of 2018). Each model must meet the requirements of the Lot20 Energy Efficiency Directive (EED). It’s all about reducing waste and being more environmentally conscious.
What is a Lot20 Compliant Heater?
All heaters require a minimum efficiency rating to qualify for lot20 compliance. This rating depends on the variation of heater.
Radiant electric heaters need to achieve a 35% efficiency, whilst storage electric heaters require a more stringent score of 38.5%.
Most heaters already have a rating of 30%. There are certain features, that added to a heater, can help increase this rating. This list includes:
- Digital temperature control: Better temperature control, rather than set automatically by how much power the heater has.
- Set weekly programmes: The ability to set programmes for each individual day across the entire week, offering greater control and energy allocation.
- A 24-hour programme: Allowing users to customise the temperature depending on the hour. This helps to set heat turn itself on in the morning and turn off when you leave for work.
- Open window/door technology: Should a window or door be opened causing a sudden change in temperature, the heater will detect this and pause its program to prevent further waste.
- Adaptive start control: The heater learns how long it takes for the room to heat up, so turns on at the right time to reach your target temperature at the correct time set by your programme.
- Distance control: Such as with a remote or app.
Each point has the key focus of improving energy usage for maximum benefit and savings for the consumer. This ease saves money and energy in the long term, as well as offering total control for the user.
Is it Likely that Efficiency Will Improve?
Absolutely. Manufacturers are keen to show their dedication to creating environmentally friendly heating solutions by offering installers and end users more cost-effective and energy efficient solutions.
Lot20 may also soon be replaced by an even higher standard as governments push for a bigger fight against climate change and to establish a standard of control and efficiency for the best performing heaters on the market.
